Playing off of Elizabeth Warren’s widely publicized quote about taxes (see picture above), the editors at The New Republic take the argument one step further, making a moral case for paying them. Their defense of taxation hinges on two arguments. “The first is distributional,” write the editors. “A civilized society recognizes [that capitalism will create losers as well as winners, often because of forces beyond any individual’s control] and vows to mitigate” that problem. “The second reason we need taxes isn’t about the least fortunate; it’s about public goods.” This is the point Warren made, and the editors at TNR make the same point, asking, “Could Bill Gates have made his fortune without government-financed education and technology?”

What I Thought the Lyrics Were

I have a new Tumblr people! Many times we don’t know what the correct song lyrics are, come up with our own newer, better lyrics and then sing them out loud until somebody politely informs us that they are incorrect.

The outcome is usually pretty amusing so I’ve decided to start collecting them and I’d love to hear what your wrong lyrics are in addition to my own.

Please visit:  whatithoughtthelyricswere.tumblr.com. Send me your lyrics and I will post them for the world to see!

WE NEED YOUR HELP WINNING A POPULARITY CONTEST!!!
Please take a minute to check out an amazing short film by a very talented director, Dan Riesser. The film is called, “T IS FOR TICKLES” and it was made for Alamo Drafthouse Films’ “THE ABCs OF DEATH” horror anthology film.
Voting is EASY. Just click the vote button above the video, drop in your email address, then click one link in your email to validate it. No creating an account, no filling out a form, nothing. It takes a second. But please watch the short first, because it turned out awesome and a lot of great people worked really really hard on it. Plus, you get to see me juggling knives and torturing a clown!
The voting ends Oct 31st. The top ten entries go on to be decided by the other 25 filmmakers. Please help Dan and everyone involved make it to the top ten. Thanks!!! Cool people will tell their friends and reblog this post… otherwise Marty the Mime is going to cut you.

The Avett Brothers played one of my favorite Bruce Springsteen songs just minutes after Braids and I were discussing how much one of them looks like Bruce Springsteen. It was magical.

My high school friends and I were always quoting Paula Poundstone back and forth to each other. Last night, I got to see her in person and it was great.
And yes. She was totally wearing a piano tie.

Amanda and I went to see Paula Poundstone in San Diego last night.
Turns out she lives in Santa Monica, so I’m sure we’ll all be going to the beach telling cat jokes together in no time. Listen for me on ‘Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me’ really soon.

I had the same plans last night as Barbra Steisand. Still cannot believe it.
braidsbraided:

That’s Barbra Streisand. 8th Row Center at the Ahmanson Theater tonight. Taken zoomed in on an iPhone from…our seats.
God of Carnage is as great as they say it is. Go see it! It’s a large theater, so most nights there should be tickets available the night of, and you can get a deal at the box office. Check it out before it’s gone.
Oh, here’s the L.A. Times review. But, although I’m an obsessive review-reader of all things, I’d say skip it and go in fresh.
p.s. Marcia Gay Harden forever.

Dylan - Shelter from the Storm

In honor of Gary.  He was a huge Dylan fan.  He would’ve wanted this to be his last song.  May you find shelter from the storm, Gary, inside the bowels of one of the feral neighborhood cats.

Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melekh Ha’olam, Bo’re, Pe’ri, Haggafen.

Note: Not actually Gary.

I miss the little guy already.

Sam’s Nut

I’ve had one line on a television so far in my acting career. “On my God. Is that one of your balls?”  I know. Shakespeare.  A BA in theatre and that’s what I got.  While I’m very proud of my work and a big fan of the show, I often ask myself, “Do I continue to pursue acting because I love it, or because I’m hoping this won’t be my primary contribution to the arts?”  Not sure yet.
